Shiloh - Charcoal

I did this for my wife's aunt for christmas. Her beagle passed last year and I thought it would be thoughtful. I didn't expect her to cry so much. I don't have access to the photo here at work, but I liked the reference picture quite a bit because she looks like she is smiling. This is the second time I've drawn a dog, and both times happened to be beagles. They're really fun to draw because the usually have such good variation in value in the fur on their backs. I have a black cat at home that I'm afraid to try to draw because she really has no difference in value. It would be quite a challenge.

Poison Ivy

Ivy    12 " x 16 " Graphite
I feel bad calling this my art because I copied it from a Terry Dodson sketch of a statue concept.

I did graph it out, so I was basically drafting his sketch. I would call it cheating.

I find it very difficult to sit down and just draw from my own mind most of the time. I can draw other people's characters without hesitation, but it's an exercise in frustration to try to draw an original.

I think this is because I have so many artists that I admire with vastly differing techniques that it has become jumbled for me, making it very challenging to have a style of my own. The ACEO's I've been posting are as close as it gets to freeform. It's still someone else's character, though.
